Father: Joseph Jaquex STAVES (1774- ) Mother:
Marriage: 21 Jun 1832 - Westport, Essex Co., N.Y.
Noted events in his life were:1. His obituary was published in The Iowa State Register, Morning Edition Tuesday, May 12, 1891 in Capital Park, Des Moines, Iowa. At the residence of his son, M.C. Staves in Capital Park, Des Moines, at 3 am May 11, Mr. Anthony Staves.
Deceased was born in the city of Peru, New York, the 25th day of March 1863; married in Westport, New York and lived with the wife of his youth fifty-nine years, and a most consoling thought in his last moments was that he need not leave her behind, she having preceded him to the better land but ten days ago.
He came west with his family and settled in Cedar Rapids in the year 1849, enlisted in the late war in 1862 in Co. A Twentieth Iowa; served one year and was discharged for disability.
The eyes of the old soldier would sparkle with enthusiasm while telling not only his own experiences but those of a patriotic ancestry. He spoke often of his father who left sunny France when a youth and coming over with Lafayette to fight for American Independence; of his being taken by the enemy and living on bread and water in a British prison; later on of three older brothers, John, Abram, and Mitchell who served in the war of 1812.
Not only was this aged father a soldier for country, but rejoiced in being accounted as a soldier for Christ. For many years he led a consistent Christian life, leaving behind precious assurances of God's keeping power.
Mr. M. C. Staves accompanied the remains to Cedar Rapids on the train last evening where the funeral services will be held among children and former friends and neighbors. A short service was held at the residence of his son in Capital Park, prior to the departure for Cedar Rapids, conducted by the Rev. J.O. Desdinger, of the United Brethren Church, in the presence of a large number of relatives and friends.
Kinsman Post No. 7, G.A.R, Kinsman Relief Corps and Mary Logan Circle No. 3, Ladies of the G.A.R., the last named organization carried out the beautiful and appropriate tenet of their order, that of placing a beautiful silken flag upon his breast, while the Relief Corps furnished a handsome floral star.
The thanks of the family are extended to Northwestern Railway Company for stopping their train at the twelfth street crossing in Capital Park to receive the funeral cartage, thereby obviating the necessity of a long journey to the depot.
